About 60660
History
Rosehill Cemetery was dedicated in 1859 on farmland well north of the city limits, and its castellated Gothic East Gatehouse, by William W. Boyington, went up on Ravenswood Avenue in 1864. A restaurant and saloon opened near that gate in 1904 and fed visitors who came out by train for the day. "L" service began at Granville on May 16, 1908, when the stop was still called North Edgewater. Thorndale had no stop until neighbors petitioned for one, gathering more than 1,200 signatures, and it opened on February 14, 1915. Broadway filled with car dealers in the meantime: by 1929 Edgewater's "automobile row" had more than 30 of them, and the Riviera Motor Sales showroom at 5948-60 N. Broadway, finished in 1926, is a Chicago landmark today. The Broadway Armory, designed in 1916 as a skating rink and made an armory by the end of World War I, hosted some of the dealers' auto shows.
The area today
Roughly, the ZIP is the stretch between Bryn Mawr Avenue and Devon Avenue, from Lake Michigan west to Damen Avenue. It is mostly northern Edgewater, plus a strip between Ravenswood and Damen that the City's maps put in Lincoln Square south of Peterson Avenue and in West Ridge north of it. Red Line trains stop at Thorndale and Granville, both with 60660 addresses on the CTA's station pages; the Bryn Mawr stop sits just over the southern line. Broadway Armory Park, at Thorndale, is the Park District's largest indoor recreation facility, with five gymnasia. At the foot of Granville, Berger Park keeps two of the old Sheridan Road mansions, rehabilitated in 1988, as a recreation building and a cultural center. The Rosehill gatehouse has been a Chicago Landmark since 1980.
Bars and restaurants here
Broadway between Thorndale and Granville is where the rooms are. Moody's Pub, at 5910 N. Broadway, serves burgers on a tree-shaded patio hung with string lights and is popular with local college students. Double Bubble, at 6036 N. Broadway, has gone by that name since November 1977 and is a longtime family-owned White Sox bar; Block Club says locals of all fandoms drink there. Beard & Belly, at 6157 N. Broadway, serves tavern-style plates and has a patio. By the Granville stop, Sovereign Liquors, at 6202 N. Broadway, is a bar and a liquor store in one, with a jukebox of mixed CDs. On Clark, M. Henry, at 5707 N. Clark, is a brunch spot with a patio under red umbrellas.
