About 60626
History
Rogers, an Irish immigrant, left about 1,600 acres in parcels scattered between today's Howard Street and Devon Avenue when he died in 1856. Rogers Avenue follows a trail that the 1816 Treaty of St. Louis made a boundary line, and Clark Street began as Chicago Avenue, a path out to the Ridgeville farms. The Jesuits bought land between Devon and Loyola avenues in 1906. On May 16, 1908, the Northwestern Elevated began running over the St. Paul railway's tracks. The Jarvis stop opened as Birchwood, and the Loyola stop was Hayes Avenue until 1910, when the street took the university's name. Howard was the line between city and suburban "L" fares, and in the 1910s and 1920s Howard Street grew into an entertainment district that drew nightlife crowds from across the North Shore. After Prohibition ended in 1933, Chicago saloons reopened while Evanston stayed dry.
The area today
The ZIP runs roughly from Devon Avenue to Howard Street and a little beyond, and from the lakefront west past Clark Street. Business districts took shape along Clark, along Devon and around the four "L" stations. Red Line trains still serve Loyola, Morse and Jarvis, and Howard at the ZIP's edge on Howard Street, where the Purple and Yellow lines also stop. Loyola University's Lake Shore campus sits at the ZIP's southeast corner. Loyola Park, whose fieldhouse has a boxing center, runs along the beach just north of it, and Lynn Takata's 100-foot concrete sculpture "Windform" there gives people a place to sit and enjoy the lake. The Bach House at 7415 N. Sheridan, a Frank Lloyd Wright design built in 1915, is a Chicago Landmark.
Bars and restaurants here
On the 1500 block of West Jarvis, Jarvis Square Tavern (open-mic nights, live music, a big patio on the square) and R Public House (brunch, pizza, a front patio that welcomes dogs) sit a few doors apart. On Glenwood, Le Piano, a jazz bar since 2018 at 6970 N. Glenwood, is furnished with antiques, theater props and poster art in the spirit of Paris's Latin Quarter, and Block Club reported in November 2025 that it would stay open. On Clark Street, the Rogers Park Business Alliance's 2024 Taco Crawl ran between Devon and Rogers avenues, with tacos, churros and pupusas at the stops.
