History

Several older settlements meet in this ZIP code. Swedish families settled the stretch of Clark Street they called Andersonville. The Ravenswood Land Company, formed in 1868, bought 194 acres of Lake View Township farmland and arranged a new Chicago & North Western commuter stop. John Lewis Cochran bought lakefront land in 1886, sold it as Edgewater and won a Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul stop at Bryn Mawr Avenue. Lake View and Jefferson townships joined Chicago in 1889, and the Northwestern Elevated opened through to Howard Street in 1908. To compete with the Loop, a business association promoted the district with images of New York and the area became "Uptown"; the Riviera opened in 1919, the Uptown Theatre in 1925 and the Aragon Ballroom in 1926, and Essanay Studios made films on Argyle Street from 1907 to 1917. In the 1950s Appalachian, Japanese American and Native American newcomers settled in Uptown's affordable apartments. Argyle's "Chinatown North" promotion grew into a strip of shops owned by people from many backgrounds, among them Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese and Korean owners, and in late 2016 the City rebuilt the street east of Broadway as its first shared street.

The area today

Roughly, the ZIP runs from Montrose Avenue north to Bryn Mawr Avenue and from Damen Avenue east past Sheridan Road to the lakefront, where it takes in Montrose Beach. Wilson, Lawrence and Argyle are the ZIP's Red Line stations, each with a 60640 address on the CTA's station pages, and Wilson is a Purple Line stop too. The Uptown Theatre, at 4816 N. Broadway, has been a Chicago Landmark since 1991 and was built with nearly 4,500 seats; the Essanay building at 1333-45 W. Argyle became a landmark in 1996. Andersonville's chamber calls Clark Street its main street, and Ravenswood Avenue, the old manufacturing corridor beside the railroad tracks, runs along the west side. At Montrose Beach, the beach house looks like a lake steamer and came out of the Park District's New Deal landfill extension from Montrose to Foster.

Near Broadway and Lawrence, the Green Mill, at 4802 N. Broadway, began as Pop Morse's Roadhouse and is known for jazz, and Uptown Lounge, at 1136 W. Lawrence, opened in 2002 and drew the crowds leaving the Aragon, the Riviera and the Green Mill. Uptown Taproom, at 1265 W. Wilson, serves tacos, sandwiches and local beer. On Clark, Simon's Tavern, at 5210 N. Clark, became a bar in 1934; SoFo Tap, at 4923 N. Clark, is a neighborhood LGBTQ+ bar that welcomes dogs; and Pizza Lobo, at 5457 N. Clark, pairs New York-style pizza with craft cocktails and a patio. Cultivate by Forbidden Root, at 4710 N. Ravenswood, is a brewpub with a woodfire hearth and a sidewalk patio.
