History

Farmers from Germany, Sweden and Luxembourg made celery the main crop of Lake View, which was organized as a township in 1857. Residents built a town hall at Halsted and Addison in 1872, and the area was annexed to Chicago in 1889. Graceland Cemetery opened in 1861, and the Buena Park (1860) and Sheridan Park (1894) developments brought middle-income and wealthy residents to the Uptown end. A baseball park went up at Clark and Addison in 1914, and the Cubs have played there since 1916. To the west, Ravenswood Avenue became a light industrial corridor early in the twentieth century, and working-class migrants set the tone of North Center's residential streets. A gay male population lived near Belmont Harbor by the 1950s, East Lake View was known as New Town in the early 1970s, and the City dedicated the rainbow pylons along Halsted in 1998. A real-estate frenzy in the early 1980s put Wrigleyville in public view.

The area today

On the City's map the ZIP runs roughly from Addison north to Montrose and from Damen east to the lakefront. Wrigley Field, a Chicago Landmark since 2004, sits half a block west of the Red Line's Addison stop, with the Sheridan stop a couple of blocks north; the Brown Line stops at Addison and Irving Park Road on the west side. On Halsted, the rainbow pylons carry the Legacy Walk, an outdoor museum of LGBTQ history, which runs up to Grace Street, and Center on Halsted opened at 3656 N. Halsted in 2007. The 3800 block of Alta Vista Terrace, "A Street of Forty Doors," has been a Chicago Landmark district since 1971. Ravenswood Avenue, once a light industrial corridor, now holds Malt Row's breweries and Koval Distillery, founded in 2008.
