History

The men who built the Hotel Lake View on the lakeshore also helped lay a plank road from Fullerton north past Graceland, and that road is now Broadway. When Lake View joined Chicago in 1889, the Lakeview East chamber says, it entered a real-estate boom that built 43 percent of Lakeview East's present homes. Once a shoreline drive was under way in the 1890s, the McConnell brothers cut big lots on Hawthorne Place, a Chicago Landmark district since 1996. A Schlitz tied house went up at Southport and Belmont in 1903, and in 2011 the City landmarked it with seven other former Schlitz tied houses. Residents worried about blight formed the Lake View Citizens Council in the 1950s, and the Belmont-Sheffield bank building at 1001 W. Belmont housed the council in that decade. The Encyclopedia of Chicago traces the unofficial name Boys Town to 1970 and sets its edges at about 3100 to 3800 North Halsted.

The area today

On the City's map the ZIP runs roughly from Diversey Parkway north to Addison and from Damen Avenue east to the lakefront. Most of it is the Lake View community area, with a narrow strip along Damen in North Center. The Red, Brown and Purple lines share the Belmont station, with transfers among the three; the Brown and Purple lines stop at Wellington, and the Brown Line stops at Southport and Paulina. Halsted between Belmont and Addison runs through Northalsted, the name the business alliance chose in 2020 over Boystown. Broadway, the old plank road, and Clark Street make up the Lakeview East retail district, and Hawthorne Place's large lots sit between it and the high-rises along Lake Shore Drive. The bank building, a Chicago Landmark since 2008, stands near the Belmont stop.

Bars and restaurants here

Sheffield Avenue is patio territory. Kirkwood Bar, at 2934 N. Sheffield, draws Indiana and Nebraska sports fans and has a beer garden that welcomes dogs, and The River Kitchen & Bar, at 2909 N., is known for a popular drag brunch. Sheffield's Beer & Wine Garden, at 3258 N., is a long-running Lakeview restaurant known for craft beer and smoked barbecue, with picnic tables and string lights on the patio. At Southport and Belmont, Schubas has been the bar and concert venue in a 1903 building since 1989, with a restaurant called Tied House beside it. Will's Northwoods Inn, at 3030 N. Racine, has a Wisconsin theme, bar food and a beer garden that welcomes dogs.
