History

Real estate speculators reserved two acres of their subdivision as Holstein Park in 1854; the settlement around it, Holstein, was home to laborers and craftsmen from Schleswig-Holstein. The park stayed unimproved for more than 40 years, until the City transferred it to the West Park System in 1901. The West Park Commissioners created Palmer Square in the early 1870s as part of the boulevard system, calling it Palmer Place until a 1909 ordinance made it Palmer Square, a name that honors John McAuley Palmer, a Civil War general and governor of Illinois. During the bicycle craze, "wheelmen" used its oval road as a track, and Ignaz Schwinn, founder of Schwinn Bicycles, lived at Palmer Street and Humboldt Boulevard in the 1910s. Over two dozen Norwegian churches were located in and around Logan Square and Humboldt Park. In 1925 the Logan Square Ball Park at Milwaukee and Sawyer, the last large open tract, went to developers, and by 1990 the community held the city's largest Puerto Rican, Cuban and South and Central American populations, along with a sizable Mexican community.

The area today

On the City's map the ZIP runs roughly from North Avenue to Diversey Parkway and from Damen Avenue west to Pulaski Road. Logan Square takes most of it, Bucktown covers most of the east end between Damen and Western, and the narrow strip along North Avenue belongs to West Town and Humboldt Park. Milwaukee Avenue cuts across it on the diagonal. The Blue Line stops at Western and California on elevated platforms and at Logan Square, a subway station at 2620 N. Milwaukee. A Chicago Landmark district designated in 2005 follows Logan, Kedzie, Palmer and Humboldt boulevards north of Cortland, and Palmer Square Park, at 2200 N. Kedzie, has a running track around its green. Holstein Park, at 2200 N. Oakley, has a fieldhouse with two gymnasiums.
