About the area

About 60652

History

Chicago annexed this land in 1889, but it stayed thinly settled; on the eve of World War II Ashburn counted only 731 residents. The Ashburn Flying Field gave the city its first airport in 1916, and Scottsdale took its name from Scott, the son of the builder Raymond Lutgert, who subdivided the old field in 1952. Industry arrived with the war. At Cicero Avenue and 77th Street, Chrysler's Dodge plant, dating to 1943, made bomber engines, Tucker built cars there in 1946 and 1947, and Ford's Korean War production followed. A developer kept the Ford name when the Ford City Shopping Center opened on the site in 1965. A 1960 boundary change put that industrial land in West Lawn rather than Ashburn. Houses and parks followed the jobs: in 1946 the Park District chose 20 acres at 83rd and Richmond, which opened in 1957 as Ashburn Park and became Hayes Park in the 1970s. The population topped out at 47,161 in 1970.

The area today

Nearly all of the ZIP is Ashburn, roughly from Western Avenue west to Cicero and from 75th Street south to 87th, with the Ford City corner of West Lawn at the northwest. Metra's SouthWest Service stops inside it, at Wrightwood (79th Street and Columbus Avenue) and Ashburn (83rd Street and Columbus Avenue). CTA's #79 bus runs along 79th Street, and the #53A and #52A buses carry Pulaski Road and Kedzie Avenue to Orange Line stations. Hayes Park, at 2936 W. 85th St., covers more than 20 acres and has an indoor pool. Durkin Park, at 8445 S. Kolin Ave., uses a school gym as its fieldhouse, and Scottsdale Park, at 4637 W. 83rd St., has a boxing ring. The Wrightwood-Ashburn library, at 8530 S. Kedzie Ave., was dedicated in 1997. Ford City Mall, at 7601 S. Cicero Ave., closed its main mall to the public on June 22, 2026, ahead of a court-ordered deadline, Block Club reported.

Bars and restaurants here

On Pulaski Road, Vito & Nick's, at 8433 S. Pulaski Road, is a third-generation family pizzeria. Block Club's October 2026 piece on tavern-style pizza calls it an often-cited originator of Chicago's square-cut thin crust, and the owner recalled her father passing squares of pizza down the bar on 79th Street. On Kedzie Avenue, Block Club's 2026 patio guide describes Qs Lounge, at 8406 S. Kedzie Ave., as a room with a big dance floor, weekly DJ sets and a patio. Just north, at 8300 S. Kedzie Ave., a resident interviewed for Chicago Magazine's October 2024 neighborhood feature called L&M Starlight Restaurant a neighborhood staple and recommended it for breakfast.
