About 60629
History
West Lawn dates to 1877, when the developers James Webb and John F. Eberhart established the village and its neighbor to the east, Chicago Lawn; Chicago annexed West Lawn in 1889. For decades most of the land stayed farm fields and marsh. Bungalows came in the 1920s, when developers courted managers and skilled workers from the stockyards, and Chicago Lawn's population reached 47,000 by 1930. West Lawn, divided from it by the Grand Trunk tracks, grew more slowly; a horse-drawn street railway ran along 63rd Street through West Lawn to Clearing, where factories were growing. The South Park Commission acquired land for Marquette Park from 1878 to 1909, and Lithuanian institutions in Chicago Lawn, Holy Cross Hospital (founded in 1928) among them, gave the community the nickname "Lithuanian Gold Coast." A monument to the pilots Darius and Girenas went up in the park in 1935. On August 5, 1966, Martin Luther King Jr. led an open-housing march into the park and was hit by a rock. The Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture, founded that same year, moved to Pulaski and 65th in 1986.
The area today
The ZIP runs roughly from 55th Street to 75th and from Western Avenue to Cicero. It is mostly Chicago Lawn and West Lawn, with the south end of Gage Park, a corner of West Elsdon and a sliver of Clearing. Marquette Park, more than 300 acres, covers part of the southern half. The King Living Memorial stands at Kedzie and Marquette Road, dedicated August 5, 2016, and at the park's center the Ashburn Prairie, three and a half acres, was moved there from 87th and Kedzie in 1993. West Lawn Park's fieldhouse is at 4233 W. 65th St. The Balzekas Museum, in the former Von Solbrig Hospital, has a ballroom and a theater. The Orange Line's Midway station, at 4612 W. 59th St., sits near the ZIP's western edge, and the #63 bus links it to 63rd and Stony Island.
Bars and restaurants here
On 63rd Street, Mr. C's Midway Bar, at 4654 W. 63rd St., is a wood-paneled room a few blocks from the airport's walls. Block Club traced the room back to at least the early 1940s and describes off-duty pilots, flight attendants and ramp agents drinking beside locals and travelers. Just west of Western Avenue, Garifuna Flava, at 2518 W. 63rd St., cooks from coastal Honduras, Belize and Guatemala; the Sun-Times in January 2026 noted its jerk chicken wings and featured its kingfish stew. On Pulaski near 59th Street, South Side Weekly picked Zacatacos, at 5925 S. Pulaski Rd., for steak tacos in 2024.
