History

A railroad and a land company made this place. The Rock Island line ran through Morgan Park in 1852, and commuter service to downtown began in 1888. In 1869 the Blue Island Land and Building Company bought and subdivided land for both Morgan Park and Washington Heights. Washington Heights was a village by 1874 and joined Chicago in 1890; by 1900 its upper-income "heights" had been renamed Beverly. Morgan Park incorporated in 1882 and joined Chicago in 1914 after a court fight. To the south, the West Pullman Land Association launched West Pullman in 1891 as an industrial and residential subdivision.

The area today

Western Avenue runs along the ZIP's western edge and Halsted Street along its eastern one. Beverly fills the north and middle, Morgan Park lies roughly below 107th Street, and the ZIP also takes in the western part of Washington Heights and a corner of West Pullman south of about 115th Street. Six Rock Island commuter stations, built between 1889 and 1945, became a Chicago Landmark district in 1995. They run from 91st Street, near the ZIP's northern edge, to 115th, and the City notes that the tracks and stations sit at ground level rather than on viaducts. The fieldhouse at Ridge Park, 9625 S. Longwood Drive, holds the John H. Vanderpoel art collection, named for a Beverly resident who taught at the Art Institute for more than 30 years.
