About 60628
History
Dutch immigrants settled a ridge they called High Prairie in 1849 and bought land along an old trail that became South Michigan Avenue. Railroads arrived in 1852, and Calumet Station, later Kensington, became part of a vast switching yard. In 1873 the developer James Bowen suggested the name Roseland. In the 1880s George Pullman built a sleeping-car factory and a town of his own beside it, outside the city limits. Roseland, immediately west, had the restaurants and saloons Pullman frowned on, and Michigan Avenue became the shopping alternative to his company town. In 1891 the West Pullman Land Association began subdividing property southwest of the factory, and by 1913 the community was full of steel mills and other industries, International Harvester among them. Pullman's houses were sold to private owners starting in 1907, the company sold the factory site in 1958, and the district became a Chicago Landmark in 1972. Michigan Avenue began to fade as a shopping street in the mid-1970s, and the loss of jobs at the steel mills, auto plants and Pullman Car Company deepened the decline.
The area today
Roseland takes up the northwestern and central part of the ZIP, with Pullman to the northeast, West Pullman to the southwest, and the east and south edges reaching into South Deering and Riverdale. Pullman's historic district is now Pullman National Historical Park, created in February 2015 as the city's first National Park Service site; it takes in the Hotel Florence, Greenstone Church, Arcade Park and the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum. Metra Electric stops on Cottage Grove at 107th, 111th and 115th Streets (Kensington) and at 103rd and Dauphin (Rosemoor). Gately Park, at 10201 S. Cottage Grove, holds the Dr. Conrad Worrill Track and Field Center, and West Pullman Park, at 401 W. 123rd St., covers a wooded slope on an ancient river bank. Chicago State University's campus, at 9501 S. King Drive, sits on the ZIP's northern edge.
Bars and restaurants here
Preservation Chicago's 2019 survey found much of Michigan Avenue's historic fabric still standing south of 111th, where Old Fashioned Donuts opened at 11248 S. Michigan in 1972. Judi's Sports Bar & Grill is at 512 E. 103rd St., east of Michigan Avenue. In Pullman, Lexington Betty Smokehouse, at 756 E. 111th St., began as a food truck in 2017, and the Pullman House Project expanded the neighborhood's first cafe, at 605 E. 111th St., in 2024. The Sun-Times reported in August 2026 that the president of Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives says workers at nearby Amazon, Method and SC Johnson facilities create demand for restaurants, and that people also come from Harborside International Golf Center (11001 S. Doty), arena concerts and the national park.
