About 60655
History
A cemetery started the place. In 1879 George Waite laid out a burial ground on a wooded ridge and called the area Mount Greenwood; more cemeteries followed, until eight of them bounded the district, which picked up the nickname Seven Holy Tombs. The place was its own village for twenty years, and its residents once took picks and shovels to a cemetery's drainage ditch and filled it in themselves. Village voters approved joining Chicago by 401 to 382, and the city took the village in during 1927, putting Engine Company 92 on 111th Street that September. A strip of land along 103rd Street, annexed in 1914 with Morgan Park, had been the link to the rest of the city. The Works Progress Administration laid sewers and street lights in the 1930s, and builders put up 4,000 homes from 1945 to 1953; the population grew from 12,331 in 1950 to 21,941 in 1960. Saint Xavier University moved here in 1956. In the early 1980s a citizens' committee formed to save the Board of Education's 1846 farm at 111th and Pulaski, which it called Chicago's last farm, and the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences was created on it in 1985.
