About the area

About 60646

History

Billy Caldwell, the Potawatomi chief known as Sauganash, once held much of this ground. The federal government ceded him a tract of nearly two and a half square miles after he helped mediate treaties, and the chamber of commerce says that original land patent explains the diagonal streets that still bend off the grid. By the 1880s the commuter rail stops had drawn settlers, and Chicago annexed most of the area, then part of Jefferson Township, in 1889. Old Edgebrook was platted in 1894 by Arthur Dixon beside the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railway; it became a Chicago Landmark district in 1988. In 1912 the firm of Koester and Zander bought part of the reserve and named its subdivision Sauganash. Houses went up in numbers only from the 1920s. After 1849 farmers hauled produce toward Chicago on plank roads that became Milwaukee and Elston avenues, and a Gladstone Park local-history website describes a developer's map, said to be from 1891, that already used the name Gladstone Park for the wedge between Milwaukee Avenue and Northwest Highway.

The area today

Roughly, the ZIP runs from Bryn Mawr Avenue north to Devon Avenue and from Pulaski Road west to the Milwaukee Avenue and Northwest Highway strip, with an arm north of Devon that takes in Wildwood and Caldwell Woods. Most of it is the Forest Glen community area, with edges of Jefferson Park, Norwood Park and North Park. Edgebrook's business district runs along Devon Avenue beside its Metra station at 5438 W. Devon, on the Milwaukee District North line, and Edgebrook Golf Course borders Old Edgebrook. Caldwell Woods, entered at Devon and Nagle avenues, has picnic groves, a sledding hill, a wellness center and access to the North Branch Trail, and Whealan Pool Aquatic Center has a water playground. In Sauganash, a special service area established in 2014 funds landscaping, decorative lighting and public art along Peterson and Cicero avenues.

Bars and restaurants here

Block Club Chicago reporting from 2024 and 2025 describes places on the main strips. Near the Metra stop, a November 2024 profile of the Edgebrook Coffee Shop and Diner, at 6322 N. Central, dates to 1957, according to its owner, and in 2024 described a new special each week drawn from cuisines across the Northwest Side. A June 2025 story on Chicago Breakfast Restaurant, at 5419 W. Devon, says it serves lunch and dinner as well as breakfast, on a menu its owner calls half American and half Mexican. On Milwaukee Avenue through Gladstone Park, a November 2025 roundup lists Antioch Pizza Shop at 5750 N. Milwaukee and Chiquita Scoops, an ice cream and snack shop, at 6140 N. Milwaukee.
