About 60631
History
Mark Noble bought land in what is now Norwood Park in 1833, and the frame house his family built that year, now called the Noble-Seymour-Crippen house, is the oldest house still standing in Chicago, according to the Encyclopedia of Chicago. A rail line began serving the area in 1853. The village of Norwood Park incorporated in 1874, and in 1893 voters approved annexation to Chicago. Edison Park, in the far northwest corner, was settled by German farmers in the 1830s. Developers platted two paper suburbs there, Canfield and Ridgelawn, after the railroad came in the early 1850s, but real growth waited until the 1890s, when Edison Park claimed to be the first Northwest Side community with electricity. Edison Park's residents chose annexation to Chicago in 1910, in part so their children could take the train to Carl Schurz High School. Edison Park's big old houses were soon outnumbered by the bungalows and Dutch colonials of the building boom after World War I. The ZIP's western tip reaches the O'Hare community area, a district Chicago added to its planning map after it annexed the airport area in 1956.
The area today
The ZIP covers all of Edison Park and the northern part of Norwood Park, roughly from Bryn Mawr Avenue north to the city's far northwest corner, with Nagle Avenue on the east, plus a slice of O'Hare around Cumberland Avenue. Downtown Norwood Park clusters around Northwest Highway and Raven Street, near the Metra station at 6088 N. Northwest Highway; Metra's Union Pacific Northwest Line also stops at Edison Park, on Olmsted Avenue. The Noble-Seymour-Crippen house, at 5624 N. Newark, is owned by the Norwood Park Historical Society, which uses it for exhibits and offices. The park called Norwood Park, at 5801 N. Natoma, added a fieldhouse in 1928 and has a swimming pool with a water slide. Edison Park's fieldhouse, at 6755 N. Northwest Highway, serves as a community arts center. The CTA Blue Line's Cumberland station, at 5800 N. Cumberland, sits in the O'Hare slice.
