About Schaumburg
How Schaumburg came to be
Schaumburg's story begins with German farmers. The Olde Schaumburg Centre Historic District still carries their mark, and the one-room Schaumburg Centre School went up in 1872. At the Spring Valley Nature Center and Heritage Farm, the village recreates life on a 135-acre farm of the 1880s. In 1938 the architect Paul Schweikher designed the house that bears his name here.
The farm landscape turned over after 1969, when several farmers, among them a dairy farmer and corn and soybean growers, sold their land for a shopping center. Woodfield Mall opened on September 9, 1971, on a site beside Interstate 90 and Interstate 290 about 24 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. It was built by Woodfield Associates, a joint venture of Taubman Centers, Homart Development and Marshall Field and Company, and opened with Sears, Marshall Field's and JCPenney as anchors. The mall was expanded in 1973 and again in the 1990s.
Schaumburg today
The village grew from a rural place into the suburb it is now, and the farm roots sit alongside the retail district rather than under it. Woodfield remains the landmark, the reason many people outside the village know its name. The heritage sites keep the older village in view for anyone who wants it.
The bar and restaurant scene
A bar or restaurant in Schaumburg works in the shadow of a regional shopping destination. Close to Woodfield and the interstates, the customer may be a shopper or someone passing through, and the room has to earn a repeat visit. Farther out, the neighborhood places depend on regulars who live nearby. Owners who run either kind of room are competing for the same dining dollar as the mall's own restaurants. The Gaming Board record on this page lists the Schaumburg locations that hold video gaming licenses.

Video gaming in Schaumburg: the short answers
- Can bars in Schaumburg have slot machines (video gaming terminals)?
The Illinois Gaming Board's September 2026 report lists 21 establishments in Schaumburg with video gaming terminals, 118 terminals in all. Illinois lets each municipality prohibit video gaming by ordinance (230 ILCS 40/27), and every location needs its own license from the Illinois Gaming Board.
- Does the revenue split change from one terminal operator to another?
No. Illinois law splits terminal income after tax evenly between the terminal operator and the establishment, whatever an agreement says, and no operator may give a location anything of value to sign (230 ILCS 40/25(c)). Operators differ in service, not in the split.
- How long does a video gaming use agreement last?
Illinois Gaming Board rules cap a use agreement at eight years and do not allow it to renew automatically (11 Ill. Adm. Code 1800.320). If your location already has terminals, your agreement states its own end date.
- How many slot machines (video gaming terminals) may one establishment have?
Illinois law allows a licensed establishment up to six video gaming terminals (230 ILCS 40/25(e)). The limit is set by the state, not by the terminal operator.
