About Palatine
How Palatine came to be
Settlers from New York and New England arrived in the 1830s, drawn by the prairie land that soldiers returning from the Black Hawk War of 1832 had described. They built in the local groves of trees, among them Deer Grove, Plum Grove, Englishman's Grove and Highland Grove. George Ela built a log cabin in Deer Grove in 1835 and is credited as the first European to live in the area.
The railroad set the town's shape. The Illinois and Wisconsin Railroad reached the Deer Grove Trading Post in 1853. That line failed, but the Chicago and North Western followed soon after, and a settlement grew around its station. Joel Wood surveyed and laid out the Village of Palatine in 1855. It was incorporated on April 2, 1866, and the State chartered it in 1869.
Palatine today
Palatine's history is still visible in places like the George Clayson House, built in 1873 at 224 East Palatine Road, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and now serves as a museum. The village also grew with the shopping centers of the postwar decades. Palatine Plaza on East Northwest Highway opened in 1961, Village Square opened in 1968, and Palatine Mall, on Hicks Road, was built in 1972.
The bar and restaurant scene
Palatine has a downtown that grew up beside the railroad and a long string of shopping-center storefronts that came later, and the restaurants and bars live in both. Near the tracks, the places draw commuters and people who walk in from the surrounding blocks. Many others sit in the shopping centers the village added after the war, along Northwest Highway and on Hicks Road, where a bar or restaurant lives or dies on repeat customers from the surrounding blocks. The Gaming Board record on this page lists the Palatine locations that hold video gaming licenses.

Video gaming in Palatine: the short answers
- Can bars in Palatine have slot machines (video gaming terminals)?
The Illinois Gaming Board's September 2026 report lists 11 establishments in Palatine with video gaming terminals, 64 terminals in all. Illinois lets each municipality prohibit video gaming by ordinance (230 ILCS 40/27), and every location needs its own license from the Illinois Gaming Board.
- Does the revenue split change from one terminal operator to another?
No. Illinois law splits terminal income after tax evenly between the terminal operator and the establishment, whatever an agreement says, and no operator may give a location anything of value to sign (230 ILCS 40/25(c)). Operators differ in service, not in the split.
- How long does a video gaming use agreement last?
Illinois Gaming Board rules cap a use agreement at eight years and do not allow it to renew automatically (11 Ill. Adm. Code 1800.320). If your location already has terminals, your agreement states its own end date.
- How many slot machines (video gaming terminals) may one establishment have?
Illinois law allows a licensed establishment up to six video gaming terminals (230 ILCS 40/25(e)). The limit is set by the state, not by the terminal operator.
