About the town

About Oak Lawn

How Oak Lawn came to be

Land broker Julian Hatch acquired 1,273 acres in 1842, and a settlement called Black Oaks Grove developed. Farmer John Simpson established his farm in 1858, and the first school opened by 1860. The name came from the many black oaks along what is now 95th Street. It was changed to Oak Lawn because another railroad station already used the Black Oaks Grove name. A 1879 agreement with railroad builder Colonel Ralph Plumb rerouted the railroad through the settlement, and the Wabash Railroad tracks were laid by 1881.

Oak Lawn incorporated as a village on April 20, 1909, with a population of 287, while many nearby communities were being annexed by Chicago. Electricity arrived in 1911. The population was over 2,000 in the 1920s and 3,500 in 1940, and a library was built in 1936. The Park District was organized in 1944, and by 1953 the population had passed 13,300.

Oak Lawn today

On the afternoon of April 21, 1967, a tornado crossed Oak Lawn, from roughly 96th Street and Austin Avenue to 91st Street and Kenton Avenue. At Southwest Highway and 95th Street it leveled a tavern, a restaurant, a motel, a food market and two gas stations, and it took out the south end of the high school. The village, which has since grown to more than 56,000 residents, has a local history branch at the Oak Lawn Public Library, which opened in 2007 with artifacts, research materials and programs.

The bar and restaurant scene

Southwest Highway and 95th Street, where the 1967 tornado leveled a tavern, a restaurant and a motel, has long been a commercial corner of the village. Today a bar or restaurant here serves a village of more than 56,000, and an owner is serving residents who know the place by its streets. The Gaming Board record on this page lists the Oak Lawn locations that hold video gaming licenses.

Questions

Video gaming in Oak Lawn: the short answers

Does the revenue split change from one terminal operator to another?

No. Illinois law splits terminal income after tax evenly between the terminal operator and the establishment, whatever an agreement says, and no operator may give a location anything of value to sign (230 ILCS 40/25(c)). Operators differ in service, not in the split.

How long does a video gaming use agreement last?

Illinois Gaming Board rules cap a use agreement at eight years and do not allow it to renew automatically (11 Ill. Adm. Code 1800.320). If your location already has terminals, your agreement states its own end date.

How many slot machines (video gaming terminals) may one establishment have?

Illinois law allows a licensed establishment up to six video gaming terminals (230 ILCS 40/25(e)). The limit is set by the state, not by the terminal operator.
