About Berwyn

How Berwyn came to be

By 1880 a syndicate that included Marshall Field had bought the land and platted it. In 1890 the syndicate sold 106 acres to Charles E. Piper and Wilbur J. Andrews, who laid out streets, sidewalks and sewers and named the subdivision after a Philadelphia suburb. On May 17, 1890, the Cicero Town Board approved the name Berwyn. To keep Chicago from annexing it, Berwyn voted in 1901 to separate from Cicero Township, and it received its charter as a city from the State of Illinois on June 6, 1908.

Czech families arrived in large numbers, along with Germans, Poles and Italians. Because heavy industry was kept out, Berwyn stayed residential, and many residents worked at Western Electric's Hawthorne Works. The population went from 5,841 in 1910 to 14,150 in 1920 and then to 47,027 in 1930. In the 1920s strict building codes produced block after block of two-story brick bungalows, and development of the central bungalow district began in 1921.

Berwyn today

Berwyn reached 54,226 residents in 1960 after a postwar building boom, then slipped as longtime residents aged and their children moved away. By 1990 some of those children were coming back with more money than their parents had, which pushed up real-estate prices. Czech heritage remained important to the city, and growing ethnic diversity later tested it. In July 1915 the excursion boat Eastland capsized in the Chicago River, and many of the Western Electric workers who died were from Berwyn.

The bar and restaurant scene

Berwyn stayed a residential city, and its bars and restaurants serve the people who live in it. With heavy industry kept out from the start, the trade is neighborhood trade: the stop after work, the family dinner, the regular who walks over. The crowd turns over through the day on the commercial streets, and an owner here is usually a familiar face to the block. The Gaming Board record on this page shows which Berwyn locations hold video gaming licenses.

Questions

Video gaming in Berwyn: the short answers

Does the revenue split change from one terminal operator to another?

No. Illinois law splits terminal income after tax evenly between the terminal operator and the establishment, whatever an agreement says, and no operator may give a location anything of value to sign (230 ILCS 40/25(c)). Operators differ in service, not in the split.

How long does a video gaming use agreement last?

Illinois Gaming Board rules cap a use agreement at eight years and do not allow it to renew automatically (11 Ill. Adm. Code 1800.320). If your location already has terminals, your agreement states its own end date.

How many slot machines (video gaming terminals) may one establishment have?

Illinois law allows a licensed establishment up to six video gaming terminals (230 ILCS 40/25(e)). The limit is set by the state, not by the terminal operator.
