About the town

About Aurora

How Aurora came to be

Aurora began at a bend in the Fox River. In 1834 the brothers Joseph and Samuel McCarty came from New York and built a mill there, and the settlement on the east bank incorporated in 1845. A separate town grew on the west bank and incorporated in 1854. The two united in 1857, put their civic offices on an island in the river so neither side owned them, and alternated the mayor between east and west until 1913.

The railroad made the town. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy opened its railcar shops here in 1856, and they stayed the city's largest employer into the 1960s. Aurora also had a habit of firsts: Illinois's first free public school district in 1851, and electric streetlights in 1881, early enough that it took the official nickname City of Lights in 1908. When factories closed in the 1980s, unemployment reached 16 percent, and the city rebuilt with riverboat gaming, business parks and redevelopment along the water.

Aurora today

Aurora straddles Kane and DuPage counties about 35 miles west of the Loop. The old downtown still sits on the river around the island where the civic offices once kept the peace between the two sides. Hispanic families, who made up about a third of the city by 2000, shaped much of the near east and west sides, and the Lincoln Highway still runs through town as it did when the streetlights first went up.

The bar and restaurant scene

Downtown, the bars and restaurants near the river fill up before and after shows and on festival weekends. Away from the center, the trade is neighborhood taverns, sports bars and family restaurants along the main east and west corridors and in the strip centers toward the edge of town. The crowd is local and steady, the kind that comes in after a shift or for the game. The Gaming Board figures on this page show how many of those places already host video gaming terminals.

Questions

Video gaming in Aurora: the short answers

Does the revenue split change from one terminal operator to another?

No. Illinois law splits terminal income after tax evenly between the terminal operator and the establishment, whatever an agreement says, and no operator may give a location anything of value to sign (230 ILCS 40/25(c)). Operators differ in service, not in the split.

How long does a video gaming use agreement last?

Illinois Gaming Board rules cap a use agreement at eight years and do not allow it to renew automatically (11 Ill. Adm. Code 1800.320). If your location already has terminals, your agreement states its own end date.

How many slot machines (video gaming terminals) may one establishment have?

Illinois law allows a licensed establishment up to six video gaming terminals (230 ILCS 40/25(e)). The limit is set by the state, not by the terminal operator.
