About the area

About 60707

History

The railroad tracks across this ZIP marked Montclare's southern edge and Galewood's northern one. Farmers such as William Sayre worked the land that became Montclare and hauled produce down Grand Avenue to the downtown markets; in 1872 Sayre let a railroad cross his farm, and Sayre Station was built there. South of the tracks, Galewood took its name from Abram Gale, who bought 320 acres in 1837, found the wooded ground hard to plow and quit farming. His land was subdivided in 1870. In 1920 a developer carved the Golf Links Subdivision out of land beside the first tee of the Westward Ho Golf Club, and in 1927 the course itself was converted into lots. Mars built a Spanish-style chocolate plant on part of the old golf-club ground in the late 1920s; it ran for 95 years before closing in 2024, Block Club reported in April 2026. In 1916 the Northwest Park District began improving the land that is now Rutherford Sayre Park with a fieldhouse, and under a stipulation in the Rutherford deed it originally included a bowling alley.

The area today

The ZIP runs roughly from North Avenue to Diversey Avenue and from Harlem Avenue, at the city's western edge, east to Narragansett Avenue. Galewood, in the Austin community area, takes about the southern half; Montclare lies north of the railroad, and a strip along Narragansett on the east side is Belmont Cragin. Metra's Milwaukee District West line stops at Mont Clare on Medill Street and at Mars on Shakespeare Avenue; the Galewood stop on Narragansett sits at the ZIP's eastern edge. CTA's 65 Grand and 74 Fullerton buses start at Grand and Nordica. Rutherford Sayre Park, 13.94 acres on Belden Avenue, has a fieldhouse that has held the Galewood-Mont Clare library branch since 2010. Shriners Children's Chicago, which opened in 1926, is on Oak Park Avenue beside the Mars stop. The Miracle House, 2001 N. Nordica, was the grand prize of a 1954 parish raffle and became a Chicago Landmark in 2021.

Bars and restaurants here

If your place is on North or Harlem Avenue, you are on the streets where City Cast Chicago's Galewood guide, published in January 2024 and updated in September 2025, pointed diners: to a North Avenue shop that had just marked its 90th anniversary and to a Mexican restaurant on Harlem. It also says two other restaurants show off the neighborhood's diversity. Both avenues carry CTA routes, the 72 North starting at North and Harlem and the 90 Harlem running up the ZIP's western edge.
