About 60661
History
Haymarket Square sat on Randolph Street. The labor rally of May 4, 1886 gathered at the mouth of Crane's Alley, off the east side of Desplaines just north of Randolph, and ended when a bomb was thrown at the police advancing on Desplaines. The trial of eight activists that followed drew worldwide attention.
The railroads shaped the blocks east of it. Clinton station opened on the Lake Street "L" in 1909, replacing the Canal station a block east, and in 1911 the Chicago & North Western opened a terminal on the blocks bounded by Madison, Kinzie, Canal and Clinton, replacing its old station at Kinzie and Wells. West Madison Street was a skid row of single-room hotels until the mid-1960s, when planners marked a six-block renewal area bounded by Washington, Canal, Monroe and the Kennedy Expressway for clearance. After a decade of stalled plans, Presidential Towers, four 49-story apartment buildings, rose there in the 1980s. The terminal's headhouse was razed in 1984, and the station that remains carries the name of former Illinois governor Richard B. Ogilvie.
The area today
The ZIP runs roughly from Van Buren Street north to Kinzie Street and from Canal Street west to Halsted Street, which puts the east end of the West Loop inside it; in Greektown the ZIP covers both sides of Halsted between Madison and Van Buren. Metra's Ogilvie Transportation Center sits on Madison between Canal and Clinton, and the CTA's Clinton stop at 540 W. Lake, on the Green and Pink lines, lists it as a connection for the Union Pacific North, Northwest and West trains. The Haymarket site at 151-199 N. Desplaines has been a Chicago Landmark since 1991. At the ZIP's southwest corner, the National Hellenic Museum, founded in 1983, opened its building at 333 S. Halsted in Greektown in 2011.

Lake, is a Japanese dining bar that won the 2025 James Beard Award for Outstanding Bar; The Infatuation described its room in 2026 as intimate and minimalist, with a basement lounge on weekends. Oriole, at 661 W.
