About the area

About 60623

History

Germans and Czechs settled South Lawndale after the Fire of 1871, and that year the real estate partners Millard and Decker began subdividing a suburb they named Lawndale, bounded by Cermak Road, 26th Street, Homan and Hamlin. The Czech neighborhood, nicknamed Czech California, filled with two- and three-flats, and by the 1920s 26th Street was a finished commercial strip; an early postcard shows the Pilsen Brewery and Pilsen Park near today's arch. North of Cermak, Ogden Avenue began as a toll road, the Southwest Plank Road, and the West Park Commission named Douglas Park in 1869 (it was renamed Douglass Park in 2020). Russian Jews became North Lawndale's largest group in the 1910s and built a shopping strip on Roosevelt Road; Black families began arriving in the early 1950s, and in 1966 Martin Luther King Jr. lived for most of the year at 1550 S. Hamlin. Mexican families were arriving in South Lawndale as early as the 1940s. In 1964 European-descended business owners proposed the name Little Village; the arch followed in 1990.

The area today

The ZIP runs from just south of Roosevelt Road to roughly 33rd and 35th Streets, and from California Avenue west to the Cicero line: the south end of North Lawndale in the north, South Lawndale and Little Village below. Douglass Park, 162 acres, fills the northeast corner, and the Pink Line stops at Kedzie, Central Park, Pulaski and Kostner, with California at the eastern edge. The arch at 26th and Albany opens a two-mile strip west to Kostner. The Little Village chamber's special service area also covers parts of 31st Street, Kedzie and Pulaski, and its annual Mexican Independence Day parade runs 26th Street from Albany to Kostner.

Bars and restaurants here

If your room is on 26th Street, your neighbors include Carnitas Uruapan, which occupies the former La Concordia and kept its 1920s Art Deco front under a sign reading La Villita; its owner told Block Club he wants shoppers on the street to stay a few hours. Farther west, Lucido's Tacos grew out of a pop-up its owner ran from his house and is known for al pastor. Osito's Tap, opened in 2019 on Ridgeway and tied to the Moreno family's liquor store, is built around craft spirits. Up north, the calendar near Douglass Park is the park's own: Ravinia concerts, the July Junta Hispana festival, and Riot Fest, which ABC7 said in May 2026 had secured a three-year Park District deal to stay in the park.
