About Bridgeport
History
The Illinois & Michigan Canal made Bridgeport. Work began in 1836, the new town took in the canal's northern end, and by 1848 the waterway was open. Irish workers came first, then Germans and Norwegians. Many of them lived on Archer Avenue, which took its name from William Beatty Archer, who oversaw the canal's construction. Lumber yards, factories and packinghouses grew up beside the river and the canal. After 1865 the Union Stock Yard pulled most packers away, though meatpacking stayed a major source of jobs here. Morgan Street became home to Poles and Lithuanians, and the Poles founded St. Mary of Perpetual Help in 1886. After 1880, streetcar lines ran along Halsted and 35th Streets, and the corner where they met became the main shopping district, taking over from Archer Avenue. Richard J. Daley, from the Hamburg section, became mayor in 1955 and held the job until he died in 1976. In 1989 Richard M. Daley, the elder Daley's son, took office as the fifth Chicago mayor born in Bridgeport.
The area today
Bridgeport keeps its blue-collar attitude but looks more diverse than it once did. Mexican and Chinese families began arriving in larger numbers in the 1990s, and Archer Avenue and Halsted Street carry Chinese signs on restaurants, repair shops and retail. The Orange Line's Halsted stop sits at Archer Avenue. Palmisano Park, at 27th and Halsted, is a former limestone quarry that operated until 1970 and opened as a park in 2009, with a fishing pond among the old quarry walls and a hill with city views. McGuane Park, at 29th and Poplar, opened in 1905 as Mark White Square and has an indoor pool and baseball fields. Morgan Street is lined with galleries and studios. The Ramova, a one-screen movie house at 3520 S. Halsted that opened in 1929 and closed in 1985, is a concert hall again, with a taproom and grill open to people without a ticket. The White Sox have played at 35th and Shields since 1910, a half-mile from the Ramova, and fans take the Red Line's Sox-35th stop to the park.
Bars and restaurants here
If your room is on Halsted near 35th, the Ramova is your neighbor, and a bar owner steps from it told Block Club that customers make the rounds of the nearby businesses. Thirty-first Street has a package store that doubles as a community bar and a Mexican restaurant, and Chinese kitchens sit on and just off Halsted. Morgan Street is quieter and artier: a listening bar and a supermarket that is also a bar and Mexican restaurant sit among the studios. The Ramova's owner told Block Club in October 2026 that Sox games have driven foot traffic and business to the theater. Some establishments on these streets have applied with the state.
